Q&A with Norman North’s Halley Jewell – Presented by David Ritter Shelter Insurance

VYPE: Halley, when did you start running cross country?

Halley Jewell: I started running cross country when I was in 6th grade and didn’t realize how much I loved it until 8th grade.

VYPE: Which teammate keeps everyone laughing and who is the most serious?
HJ: The teammate that keeps people laughing and having a good time would be senior, Anja Fisher! She’s always singing and getting me to sing with her while running which makes the miles go by faster. I’m not sure if we have “serious” girls on the team, I mean, I’m serious about running but I like to have fun while doing it!

VYPE: What’s your favorite memory as a athlete for NNHS?

HJ: My favorite memory as a runner was getting a PR in regionals with a time of 19:28 and medaling. As well as running my second fastest time at state which was a course PR for me.

VYPE: Do you have a favorite place to compete?

HJ: My favorite places to compete are at the Deer Creek course and Edmond Santa Fe.

VYPE: What makes representing NNHS in competition special to you?

HJ: Norman North has always had great athletic teams so being surrounded by hard workers on my cross country team has always been such a great motivation.

VYPE: How do you like to spend your free time?
HJ: When I have downtime, I like to spend it with the people I’m close with such as friends and family. It’s nice to have a reset every once in a while.

VYPE: Do you have a favorite subject in school or a favorite teacher?
HJ: My favorite subject would probably be English, and I would say my favorite teacher that I’ve had has been Mr. Curry.

VYPE: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
HJ: The best advice I’ve ever received is you practice how you play. If you’re not running faster or pushing yourself, you’re not going to achieve the goals you’re looking for. It’s always nice to have a happy medium but when it comes to mileage and workouts you have to be willing to put in the work.
VYPE: What are your plans for life after high school?
HJ: After high school I plan to play soccer at the University of Oklahoma and spend time working towards what I want to do with the rest of my life.
