Norman North’s Jaxon Bonilla – Cross Country Spotlight – Presented by David Ritter Shelter Insurance

Norman North High School distance runner Jaxon Bonilla has learned that success in cross country is as much about belief and patience as it is about mileage and pace work. Entering his senior year for the Timberwolves, Bonilla is part of a varsity group that expects to line up against the best in Oklahoma and belong there.

“I love that, as a team, we truly believe we can compete with anyone in the state, no matter who they are,” Bonilla said. “That confidence pushes all of us to work harder every day. My teammates are also always willing to meet up for extra runs, even when there isn’t an official team practice. Our coaches, Coach Amber Linse and Coach Jonathan Koscinski, are another huge part of what makes this team special. They genuinely care about us, support us regardless of the outcome, and constantly push us to become the best versions of ourselves.”

Faith and family anchor Bonilla’s approach to competition, school and daily life. “Jesus is my greatest inspiration. If the same power that raised Him from the dead lives in me, then there’s no limit to what I can accomplish through Him. That mindset influences how I approach athletics, academics, and life as a whole. My family also inspires me because they have always supported me in everything I do. Another inspiration is my sister Jenna. Every time I watch her race, she amazes me, and I truly believe she’ll one day be an even better cross country and track athlete than I am.”

He also draws motivation from former teammate Landen Key, whose grit helped the 4×800 relay earn fourth at state and set a school record. “He is the definition of perseverance and determination,” Bonilla said.

Bonilla, who will be a senior this fall, hopes to continue running cross country and track in college while earning his degree. As he looks ahead to the upcoming season, he carries one key lesson from last year.

“One of the biggest lessons I learned is that I don’t have to be at my fastest early in the season,” he said. “The goal is to keep improving so I’m running my best when it matters most – at the state meet in late October.”
