Norman North’s John Paul Lundquist – Football Spotlight

Norman North junior defensive back John Paul Lundquist is embracing a bigger role for the Timberwolves this season, leaning on family inspiration, hard work and a tight-knit locker room to help guide his team. The strong safety said the bond within the program is one of the things that makes Norman North special. “We have a really good bond. We all support each other and celebrate each other’s successes.”

That support system extends beyond the field. Lundquist points to his late grandfather as the person who shapes how he approaches football and life. “Someone who inspires me is my grandfather. He always put as much effort he could into everything he did and that’s what I strive to do. He recently passed away and I want to make sure I live my life like he did.”

On Friday nights, Lundquist patrols the back end of the defense, where his instincts and aggressiveness fit naturally. “I play strong safety. My favorite part about it is I get to hunt the ball down,” he said. That mindset has been sharpened during the offseason, where he has seen the entire group buy into getting stronger and faster. “Summer workouts have been great. The team is getting stronger and faster because of the work being put in. What I’ve learned about this team is they are willing to grind and work. I’m excited for what we’re going to do this season.”

Lundquist is a multi-sport athlete, and he said his work in the outfield translates well to the secondary. “I play baseball. I’m a center fielder which is pretty much like a safety which translates nicely.” He has also tried to follow the example of former teammate Josh Williams, whose attitude left a lasting impression. “Josh Williams would put the work in and not complain. He always was just trying to get better which helps the people around him. I will miss playing with him.”

Entering his junior year, Lundquist has clear goals for his future and a clearer idea of what it takes to reach them. “I want to play football in college and see where football can take me.” Lessons from last season still drive him, especially the importance of resilience. “A good lesson I learned last year was you can’t get down when things aren’t going your way. You have to bounce back, stay composed, and believe. Our coaches really instill that in us. You have to have a positive attitude and good body language even when things aren’t going your way and never give up. We had a great comeback against Edmond Memorial last year because we never gave up.”

He describes his game around speed, anticipation and a growing physical edge. “A strength I have is using my speed and anticipation towards being a ball hawk. I like to go get the ball when it’s in the area. This coming season I’m going to show the physicality I can bring to the table. I spent this last year really focusing on my strength and size.”
