6A Football Tidbits from VYPE

Bixby
Blake Hogshooter caught three passes for 92 yards, all for touchdowns, in the Trojans 31-14 regular season victory over Jenks.
Quarterback Connor Kirby completed 16 of 19 passing for 300 yards and six touchdowns in Bixby’s 51-7 win over Broken Arrow. The Spartans have won the last two meetings by a combined score of 128-24.
Bixby averaged 59.6 points per game in 2023. During the last 75 games, the Spartans have a record of 74-1 and have scored more than 60 points 31 times.
Broken Arrow
Octavian Roberson rushed 21 times for 141 yards and a touchdown in the Tigers 27-17 loss to Union.
The Tigers host Fayetteville, AR on September 6th. Fayetteville is the defending Class 7A State Champion in Arkansas and finished 13-0 in 2023. It’s the first meeting between the teams since 1990.
Broken Arrow failed to win a playoff game for the first time since 2016 and posted the lowest total of wins since 1977.
Edmond Deer Creek
Quarterback Grady Adamson threw for 180 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 80 more and a score in the Antlers 49-7 win over Lawton.
Deer Creek faces McGuinness on August 30th for the first time since 2015 and the tenth time overall. The Fighting Irish lead the series 6 to 3.
Deer Creek has won a playoff game in three consecutive seasons for the first time since 1999-2001. The Antlers have never won playoff games in four consecutive seasons.
Edmond Memorial
Quarterback David McComb set a school record throwing for 477 yards in a 34-31 win over Deer Creek. McComb connected on four touchdown passes and rushed for an additonal 49 yards.
Edmond opens the season against Del City. It’s the first meeting between the schools since 2009. Dating back to 1974, each team has won 14 games in the series.
Justin Merideth returns to the head coaching position at Memorial. The Bulldogs have posted only four winning seasons since 1994, all which were under Merideth in his previous tenure.
Edmond North
The Huskies take on Deer Creek for the fifth consecutive season. The Antlers have won all four previous meetings by an average of 20 points per game.
Edmond North opens the season against Putnam West. This will be the first game between the teams since 2009. The series began in 1996 with the Huskies owning a 4-2 edge over the Patriots.
Edmond North travels to Bixby on October 11th. It will be the first meeting ever between the teams.
Edmond Santa Fe
Running back Demarius Robinson ran for 340 yards and six touchdowns on only 20 carries to lead the Wolves to a 54-7 win over Edmond Memorial.
Santa Fe faces Norman High for the 13th consecutive season. The Wolves have won four of the last five and own the all-time series lead 13-5.
After a two-year absence, Westmoore is back on the schedule on October 17th. The Wolves have won the last five games in a row over the Jaguars
Enid
Enid and Stillwater face off for the first time since 2017. This will be the 48th all-time meeting between the teams. The Pioneers have won 20 of the last 23.
Quarterback Israel Gonzalez completed touchdown passes to four different receivers in the Plainsmen’s 49-42 win over Moore.
Enid travels to Lawton on September 5th. The teams last met in 2017. Lawton has won nine in a row with the last Plainsmen win coming in 1975.
Jenks
Running back Kaydin Jones combined for 216 all-purpose yards and threw a touchdown pass in the Trojans 31-24 regular season win over Union.
It has been since 1992, that any three-year player at Jenks didn’t have the opportunity to play for a state championship. The Trojans have won or finished runner up in 23 of the last 31 years.
Jenks and Union will play for the 72nd time on September 13th. Jenks has won 7 of the last nine meetings against Union. It’s the best stretch for the Trojans since winning 9 of 10 games from 1989 to 1998.
Moore
C.J. Simon caught 10 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns in the Lions 49-42 loss to Enid.
Quarterback Malakai Miller ran for 117 yards and two scores and threw for another 165 and two touchdowns in Moore’s 43-42 win over Norman.
Moore travels to Mustang on September 27th for the 20th all-time meeting between the teams. The Lions have won the last two games in the series but trail 11-8 since 1988.
Mustang
Mustang and Broken Arrow meet for the fifth time. The teams have split the previous four meetings with the last coming in 2015. Three of the four games have been decided by a touchdown or less.
Quarterback Tyson Pogi completed 16 of 18 passes for 292 yards and five touchdowns in the Broncos 48-10 win over Edmond North. It was Pogi’s first varsity start.
Mustang hosts Bixby on October 25th. It’s the third all-time meeting and first between the teams since 2011 when Mustang defeated the Spartans 27-14. Bixby eliminated Mustang from the 1982 Class 4A playoffs 20-14.
Norman
Quarterback Phoenix Murphy completed 18 of 25 passes for 337 yards and three touchdowns in the Tigers 52-48 loss to Edmond Santa Fe.
Norman defeated Broken Arrow 21-18 in the first round of the playoffs. The Tigers had lost the 11 previous meetings between the two schools beginnng in 2010.
The playoff victory was the first for Norman since defeating Yukon 38-13 in the first round of 2012. Since winning the 1992 6A championship, the Tigers are 5-18 in the post-season.
Norman North
Mason James caught 5 passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score in the Timberwolves 30-14 win over Westmoore.
The Timberwolf shut out Crosstown Clash rival Norman High for the first time since 2016 and the third time overall. Norman High last blanked the Timberwolves in 2001.
Head coach Justin Jones passed Lance Manning as the all-time wins leader at Norman North. Jones has 35 wins since taking over in 2018.
Owasso
Wide receiver Noah Hill caught 7 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown in the Rams 50-21 win over Norman North.
Owasso and Sand Springs play for the 25th time on September 13th. The Sandites won the last meeting in 2013, but Owasso holds a 16-6 edge in the all-time series.
Owasso swept the Norman schools in 2023 and has won 11 straight games against Norman High and Norman North, last losing to Norman North in 2016.
Union
Union opens the season against Bentonville, AR. The Tigers finished 9-4 in 2023 and lost 22-16 to Fayetteville in the Class 7A state title game. The RedHawks haven’t faced an opponent from Arkansas since 1997.
Union and Stillwater meet for the first time since 2013. The RedHawks have won 18 in a row against the Pioneers. Stillwater’s last win came in the 1997 playoffs with Matt Holliday at quarterback.
Quarterback Shaker Reisig complted 22 of 28 passes for 322 yards and five touchdowns and ran for a score in the RedHawks 55-22 regular season win over Owasso.
Westmoore
The Jaguars ended a 15-game losing streak to Jenks with a 16-12 win over the Trojans. Westmoore held Jenks to just 29 yards rushing on 28 attempts.
Westmoore travels to Edmond to take on the Bulldogs October 25th. It will be the 20th meeting between the teams. The Jaguars have won six straight against the Bulldogs and hold a 10-9 edge in the series.
Westmoore defeated Broken Arrow 42-35. It was the first ever win over the Tigers ending a 10-game losing streak dating back to 2012.
Yukon
Wide receiver Lucas Jones caught 11 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns in the Millers 42-28 loss to Edmond Memorial.
The Millers more than doubled their points per game average in 2023 from 2022. Yukon averaged 28 points per game and scored at least 21 points in 9 of its 10 games.
Yukon defeated Stillwater for the first time since 2010, 37-34. It was the Millers 3rd win against the Pioneers in ten all-time meetings, dating back to 1974.
Bartlesville
The Bruins defeated Putnam North 45-14 in the first round of the playoffs. It was only the third playoff home game for the Bruins since 1988, when the defeated Booker T. Washington 20-12. The other was a 2015 win over Midwest City.
Wide receiver Damien Nike caught 9 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half, of the Bruins 51-20 win at Tathlequah.
Bartlesville has won playoff games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1987 and 1988.
Capitol Hill
Capitol Hill opens the season against Crooked Oak on September 6th. The schools are located only 4.1 miles apart but will play for the first time since 1977, when the Red Wolves defeated the Ruf-Nex 20-16.
The Red Wolves take on Putnam West for only the third time since 1975 on October 25th. Putnam West has won all eight meetings between the teams.
Southeast drops off the schedule for the first time since 2015. The Spartans won the last 13 meetings between the teams.
Choctaw
The Yellowjackets host Lubbock, TX-Monterey to open the season. The Plainsmen finshed 4-6 in 2023.
Wide receiver Juju Smith scored on a 97-yard kick return while adding three more touchdowns on 176 total-yards in a 47-3 win over Putnam North.
Quarterback Cash Williams completed 23 of 27 for 415 yards and six touchdowns and ran for another score in the Yellowjackets 65-20 win over Putnam City.
Lawton Ike
The Eagles defeated rival Lawton High 41-33. It was the second win in three seasons against the Wolverines. Lawton had won the previous 12 games. Eisenhower last won the city championship in 2006.
Eisenhower has reached the five win plateau in two of the last three seasons. The Eagles haven’t recorded a winning season since 2010.
Carl Albert is on the Eisenhower schedule for the ninth consecutive season. The Titans have emerged victorious in all eight previous contests. The Eagles last beat Carl Albert 36-20 in 1963.
Muskogee
Jamarian Ficklin completed 15 of 18 passes 375 yards and eight touchdowns in the Roughers 69-0 win over Putnam West.
Bartlesville transfer P.J. Wallace rushed for 100 yards, threw a touchdown pass and caught one in the Bruins 51-20 win over Tahlequah.
The Class 6A-Division II champions record of 21-4 is the best two year run since the 1985-86 mark of 23-4. The 1986 team was the last to win a state title until the 2023 team hoisted the gold ball.
Northwest Classen
The Knights travel to Western Heights on September 20th. It’s the first meeting in the series since 2013. Northwest Classen has won the last two games against the Jets.
Northwest opens the season against rival Oklahoma City school Southeast. It’s the first meeting between the teams since 1999 when the Spartans defeated the Knights 46-7.
Wide receiver Brandon Butler caught eight passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns, including an 80-yard score in the Knights 55-26 loss to Lawton.
Piedmont
Guthrie is not on the Piedmont schedule for the first time in ten years. The Blue Jays hold an 11-2 edge over the Wildcats, including shutout wins the past two seasons.
Lawton Ike is on the schedule for the ninth consecutive year. Piedmont has won five in a row against the Eagles.

Putnam City
Putnam City will be looking for its first victory against Stillwater since 1985. The Pioneers have won five in a row over the Pirates. Stillwater eliminated Putnam City from the playoffs last year 56-7.
Putnam City and Lawton Ike will meet for the 20th time on October 11th and the first time since 2009. The Pirates have a three game winning streak in the series.
The Pirates defeated Tahlequah 41-21 to secure their first playoff win since defeating Putnam North 49-28 in the first round of the 2007 post-season.
Putnam North
Putnam North will face Shawnee and Muskogee each for the first time. The Panthers host Shawnee to open the season on September 6th and Muskogee to end the season on November 8th.
Putnam North takes on Sand Springs for only the second time in history. The Panthers defeated the Sandites 24-7 in 1990 on the way to the state championship game.
The Panthers will be looking to end a two-game losing streak to rival Putnam West on September 27th. The teams will be playing for the 45th straight season. North holds a 26-19 edge all-time
Putnam West
The Patriots started the season 3-0 for the first time since 1995 and defeated Putnam City and Putnam North in the same season for the first time since 2016.
Putnam West made the playoffs for only the second time since 1996, losing 27-21 at Ponca City.
Putnam West beat Booker T. Washington 34-23. It was the first win over the Hornets since 1977. Booker T. had won four in a row in the series by an average margin of 40 points.
Ponca City
Ponca City and Bartlesville meet again after a two-year absence on the schedule. Bartlesville’s two high schools combined into one in 1982, since then the Bruins lead the Wildcats 20-18, with Ponca winning the last two.
Ponca City will be aiming to break a four year losing streak to Sand Springs. The teams have played every year since 1978. The Sandites have a 26-18 advantage during that time span.
The Wildcats will be looking for their sixth win in seven tries against Putnam North. The teams have played the last two seasons and first played in 1982. The Panthers last win over the Wildcats was 3-0 in 1984.
Sand Springs
Running back Ali McCoy rushed 10 times for 213 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Sandites 41-7 win over Tahlequah.
Quarterback Easton Webb doubles as a standout pitcher for the Sandites. Webb pitched a three-hit shutout against Owasso to lead Sand Springs to the 6A title game.
Sand Springs has won 7 games or more during all four years of head coach Bobby Klink’s tenure. That current streak is the longest for the Sandites dating back to 1957,
Sapulpa
Sapulpa hosts Grove on September 20th. It’s only the second time the two teams have played. The Ridgerunners defeated the Chieftains 70-28 in the first round of the 2022 Class 5A playoffs.
The Chieftains host Capitol Hill on September 27th. It’s the first meeting ever between the schools. Sapulpa last faced an OKC Public Schools team in 2005, defeating Northwest Classen 55-19.
Sapulpa and Tahlequah will meet for the 20th time since 1970 to open the season on September 6th. The Chieftains have won the last two matchups and 14 of the 19 all-time.
Southmoore
Norman North is not on the schedule for the first time since 2013. The Timberwolves won 7 of those 10 games and five in a row. It’s the first time ever Southmoore doesn’t play a team from Norman.
Southmoore and Lawton Ike will play for the first time since 2009. The Sabercats eliminated the Eagles 34-32 in the first round of the 6A playoffs.
Southmoore hosts Choctaw on October 11th. The Sabercats have won both previous meetings between the schools, the last coming in 2013.
Stillwater
Sophomore Deakon Jones caught 5 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown in the Pioneers 35-18 win over Sand Springs.
Stillwater hosts Carl Albert on September 20th. It’s the first game between the teams since 2001, when the Titans came away with a 50-23 win.
The Pioneers travel to Choctaw on October 17th. The teams have met in the playoffs in 4 of the past five seasons with the Pioneers going 3-1 against the Yellowjackets during that stretch.
U.S. Grant
US Grant and Northwest Classen will face off for the seventh consecutive season. The Generals have won four of the six games, taking last year’s game 20-0.
The Generals tangle with Stillwater for the 11th time. The Pioneers have won eight games in a row. US Grant last beat Stillwater 32-14 in 1958.
The Generals will be looking to end a 17-game district losing streak. US Grant has scored a total of 20 points in those 17 games combined.
